You might have seen that we have been fundraising to provide the hospital with a dedicated children’s halo traction wheelchair. We are delighted to say that with your help, we’ve done it!
How does the wheelchair help?
Using a frame placed around the patient’s head, doctors use halo traction to gradually stretch the spine to ensure the best chance of success in surgery to correct conditions like scoliosis. It’s a gradual process so treatment can take several weeks or months and traditionally, the patient has been confined to bed.

A specially adapted wheelchair is a game-changer, allowing people to stay mobile and take part in everyday activities during their treatment. This can improve comfort, support physical and mental wellbeing, and help patients feel more independent during a challenging time. Because they are custom-made, halo traction wheelchairs cost more than standard ones but they play an important role in helping treat complex spinal conditions.

Younger patients at RNOH have been using temporarily adapted adult chairs but having one of a size that’s right for them is a really important addition so that their treatment can progress more comfortably. We are so grateful for the support of our donors who came together to raise the £16,000 that was needed for the chair – your support has made a huge difference. Thank you!
