Today, on Spinal Cord Injury Awareness Day (SCIAD) 2025, we’re recognising the strength, resilience and achievements of people living with spinal cord injuries. The Spinal Injuries Association says incidents are more common than many realise. Updated figures this year reveal:
· 4,700 people in the UK sustain or are diagnosed with SCI each year, up 300 since 2024
· The UK SCI population now exceeds 105,000 people
This year’s SCIAD theme, ‘A Life Well Lived’, shines a light on life after injury, and the importance of support in shaping fulfilling futures. With the right care, many of those living with SCI can, and do, go on to live well. In 2014, Marcus Perrineau-Daley suffered a severe SCI in a motorbike accident. He spent six months at RNOH’s Spinal Cord Injury Centre (SCIC), where he began his road to recovery. Thanks to his own resilience and supported by a dedicated team, Marcus embraced adaptive sport. Today, he’s an accomplished athlete and Paralympic medallist, achieving silver in the wheelchair sprint at Paris 2024.
RNOH Charity has a strong connection to the SCIC at Stanmore, with your support helping to provide the best possible treatment at RNOH. From funding the expansion to six more beds to the addition of the Lyra Gait Trainer and the recent renovation of the day-room, we are very proud of this long and successful partnership.
