Covid Appeal Update 2021

The RNOH has been playing a key role in the North Central London NHS network’s response to the coronavirus crisis. Last year it became an orthopaedic trauma centre for the first time since the 1980s. This year, in response to the devastating second wave of Covid-19, the hospital radically altered its working practices, accepting Covid-positive patients into its critical care beds and providing support to the wider London NHS network by seconding staff to other hospitals.

All of this has put considerable pressure on our frontline staff, who have been working long, stressful hours in exceptionally difficult conditions. Our patients have also been in need of additional supplies, as many of them were transferred to the RNOH from other hospitals with no spare clothing or personal toiletries.

In response to the second wave of the coronavirus, the RNOH Charity re-launched its Covid-19 Appeal, reaching out to its loyal supporters, the local community, and the national media.

We were overwhelmed by the incredible response received and have been able to provide the following:

  • Hot food for all frontline staff who were unable to reach the hospital canteen
  • 7,000 drinks and snacks to help boost morale
  • 2 coffee machines
  • A television to help staff relax after long shifts
  • Refreshments for all staff for Project Wingman - a specially set-up staff wellbeing space
  • 3,000 tubes of hand cream to soothe sore hands
  • A tumble dryer for the Spinal Cord Injury Centre
  • Over 200 toiletry items: shampoo and conditioner, shaving items, soap, and deodorant
  • Hundreds of new clothing items, including joggers, T-shirts, socks, underwear, and pyjama sets
  • Hundreds of milk sticks for ward staff
  • 200 smoothies

Our warmest thanks to everyone who supported the Appeal with a gift-in-kind: Tesco Borehamwood, Innocent Smoothies, Childs Farm hand cream, AV Lounge, Mr Bean-2-Cup Coffee and Shree Kutch Satsang Swaminarayan Temple.

A special thanks too to the Charity-funded volunteer team for distributing these items around the hospital.

As well as gifts-in-kind, the Charity has received a large number of very generous cash donations towards the relaunched Covid Appeal. These have included over £10,000 in donations.and £44,000 from NHS Charities Together for a new staff wellbeing hub at the RNOH.
