Sir András Schiff to perform at RNOH Fundraising gala concert

Posted by Vicky Brady on 22 January 2015

We are excited to announce the London Festival Orchestra will be celebrating Ross Pople's 70th birthday with a gala concert at the Queen Elizabeth hall on London's South Bank, with special guest Sir András Schiff. It is Ross's wish that all funds raised from the concert go towards the RNOH's Redevelopment Appeal.

In 2012, Ross Pople, the founder and principal conductor of the London Festival Orchestra, suffered a skiing accident and was subsequently treated at The Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital.

Ross explains "The memory of being on my skis in the crisp snow on a beautiful day, then being on my back looking at the blue sky without any sensation in my body is still vivid.

The helicopter ride and the first few days of intensive care in a specialist spinal injury unit in Mumau, Germany is a blur. The fight to regain movement and the excruciatingly slow and painful path to recovery is indescribable. Without a doubt, it is a testament to the skill and compassion of dedicated medical professionals working together that I am able to celebrate my 70th.

During my time at the Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital in Stanmore I witnessed first-hand the profound need for specialist care and the difference it makes to lives.

This auspicious birthday coincides with the resurgence of my musical energies and how wonderful it is to share it with a musician I most admire, András Schiff. I am immensely looking forward to this very special evening of wonderful music-making, surrounded by my lifelong colleagues and friends."
